The Charles River has long been a symbol of both the beauty and fragility of the natural world. It is a place where people come to relax and recreate, but it is also a river that has been polluted and damaged by human activity. In recent years, the Charles has become a focal point for the new environmentalism, a movement that is working to protect and restore our natural resources.

Waldman's book tells the story of the Charles River, from its headwaters in the hills of central Massachusetts to its mouth at Boston Harbor. Along the way, he meets with scientists, activists, and ordinary citizens who are working to make the river a healthier place. He also explores the history of the river, from the days when it was a pristine wilderness to the present day, when it is a vital part of the Boston metropolitan area.

Down the Charles River is a beautifully written and deeply personal book. It is a must-read for anyone who cares about the environment, and it is a powerful reminder that we can all make a difference.
