In the United States, over 60,000 women were sterilized against their will between 1907 and 1974. This shocking history is documented in the new book Sterilized By The State, by journalist and historian Kimberly Springer.

Springer's book tells the stories of women from all walks of life who were victims of forced sterilization. There was Carrie Buck, a young woman who was sterilized in 1927 after being declared "feebleminded" by a Virginia court. There was Alice Smith, a Native American woman who was sterilized in the 1970s after being pressured by a doctor at an Indian Health Service clinic. And there were thousands of other women, whose stories have never been told.

Sterilized By The State is a powerful and eye-opening account of a dark chapter in American history. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in women's history, reproductive rights, or social justice.

Forced Sterilization in the United States

The forced sterilization of women in the United States was a widespread practice in the early 20th century. The first state to legalize forced sterilization was Indiana, in 1907. By the 1930s, 31 states had passed laws allowing for the sterilization of people with disabilities, mental illness, or criminal records.

The stated purpose of these laws was to prevent the transmission of "undesirable" traits to future generations. However, the majority of women who were sterilized were not actually disabled or mentally ill. Many were poor, single mothers, or women of color. They were often coerced into signing consent forms by doctors, social workers, or other authority figures.

The consequences of forced sterilization were devastating for the women who were subjected to it. Many women were left infertile and unable to have children. Others suffered from physical and psychological problems. Some women even died as a result of the surgery.

The Legacy of Forced Sterilization

The legacy of forced sterilization in the United States is still felt today. Many women who were sterilized against their will continue to suffer from the physical and emotional effects of the procedure. And the stigma surrounding sterilization persists, making it difficult for women to talk about their experiences.

Sterilized By The State is an important book that helps to shed light on this dark chapter in American history. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the history of reproductive rights in the United States and the ongoing fight for justice for women.
